Plot Summary

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock America, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook ), American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A sloppy, miscast, hammed up, overlong, overloud story that still sends you out of the theater on a cloud of rapture. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Dec 19, 2013

Fresh: It turns out that comb-overs, cleavage, cocaine and kookiness are an unbeatable combo. – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News, Jan 8, 2014

Fresh: "American Hustle" may have taken its inspiration from the art of the steal, but it has a heart of pure, if slightly tarnished, gold. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Dec 19, 2013

Fresh: Filled with rich characters and sharp dialogue, the movie turns on questions of friendship and fidelity, both personal and political, with a knockout performance by Jennifer Lawrence as the con man's jealous, ball-busting wife. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Dec 19, 2013

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO HATED THIS MOVIE ?

I usually agree with critics about 90% of the time, but I honestly don't understand why critics liked this movie so much. It's boring, tedious, unfunny, awkward and unrealistic. I'm not a fan of David O. Russell, but I did somewhat enjoy Silver Linings Playbook. So I thought this movie would be good, but in the end I honestly hated it. However Christian Bale and Amy Adams were incredible and they had the 70's look and music down on point, but the story was dull and poorly written. Don't go see this movie! Save your time and money on a better movie like Gravity or 12 Years a Slave.

Waste of time.

Even an all star cast couldn't save this massively boring, predictable movie. Christian Bale was phenomenal - everyone else was just alright, very dissappointed in JLaw's acting, she didn't fit this movie (too young) and seemed to be playing Jennifer playing dress up. Messed up the accent too. Definitely not an oscar worthy movie, but seeing as how it will stupidly probably get nominated for one, the only one it should go to is Christian Bale.

Very dull

Disappointed in this one. Loved the acting but plot was DULL. Went with 9 people everyone was bored.
