Rotten: A vile, witless sex comedy ...
Rotten: The movie's ideas about relationships would've felt middle-of-the-road in the '80s, and its big epiphany moments (Guys can fall in love, too!) are shallow enough to make you long for the comparatively profound rom-com oeuvre of Kate Hudson.
Rotten: Take three horny guys, all twentysomethings, mix with a plot that was old last century, and serve to an audience so desperate toilet gags they might forgive a movie wired only with cliches.
Rotten: What "Awkward" is actually about, albeit unintentionally, is how passing off misogyny for comedy has gotten so terribly passe, as insulting to the guys as to the young women.
This movie was not funny at all, and not even from a guys point of view. Don’t waste your time/money.
Terrible Movie, Great Soundtrack
I expected this movie to be better than it was. Yeah, the actors in it aren’t the greatest, but they have been apart of some good comedy films previously. Anyways, while watching the movie, it really lives up to the title; “Awkward.” I couldn’t take Zac Efron serious in a mature role, something he should probably get a good acting coach for, but, nothing was believable. The movie felt as though these friends were playing “grown up” and I wasn’t buying it. One good thing, or highlight, from this film would certainly be the soundtrack. The music is indie-Alternative, featuring some 80’s esque music and really fits with the backdrop of New York City. The soundtrack alone made me “like” this film and does certainly help make this film watchable.
The characters are ego centric narcissists who view the manipulation and conquering of women as a sport. While that may have seemed like a recipe for some "Awkward Moments" this movie simply fails to draw the viewer in....except for an occasional contemptible glance. Where movies like Swingers knocked it out of the park, Awkward Moments is nothing more than a cheap knock off (minus the laughs or heartfelt moments).
