About the Movie

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, BOYHOOD charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. BOYHOOD is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It's impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Boyhood is proof that a strange magic can still bloom amidst the tragedy that buffets human life. – Paula Mejia, Newsweek, Jan 2, 2015

Fresh: While everything about Boyhood is done with extraordinary care, the master stroke was clearly the casting, 13 years ago, of a little Texas boy named Ellar Coltrane. – Jocelyn Noveck, Associated Press, Jan 2, 2015

Fresh: It's like a time-lapse photo of an expanding consciousness. – Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail, Jan 2, 2015

Fresh: Calling it a sum of its parts can be a backhanded compliment, but it feels like especially worthy praise for Boyhood, considering how much went into making it feel whole. – David Sims, The Atlantic, Sep 22, 2016

Simple, beautiful, gorgeous film for the kid in all of us!

Life Is Beautiful. See this movie. It will change your life, move you, remind you of your youth, etc. I stayed up till 4am to finish this film & it was worth it (6 hrs later, I'm writing this review). A wonderful time capsule of a middle class family & it's free-spirited son. Great acting, writing, directing & cinematography from the cast & crew. Who knew that a film about an indie kid & his trying-to-do-our-best family that doesn't deal with AIDS, war, Holocaust, or racism would win all the awards? Bravo, Mason & Company, Bravo! Grade: A+

Definitely a good movie, different than many films out there. Yes it's long but it's worth the time if you like coming-of-age stories and real life dramas. I can see why not all would like this film but it was right up my alley. It wasn't over Hollywood ized which was nice. I preferred this Oscar pick over the theory of everything.

Just WOW!
