About the Movie

Once upon a time, Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) was an award-winning Hollywood screenwriter, but divorce and a string of unsuccessful films have left him with nothing but bad debts and blank pages. So when his agent arranges a job as guest screenwriting professor at a remote university in upstate New York, a desperate Keith can’t say no. Initially hoping to give minimal effort to actual teaching so he can focus on his next script, Keith unexpectedly finds himself becoming invested in his students lives, including Holly (Marisa Tomei), a single mom looking to start her own new chapter. The Rewrite features an all-star cast, including Academy Award Nominee J.K. Simmons, Allison Janney, Chris Elliott and Bella Heathcote.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Grant, now 54, is facing the expiration date of his twinkly boyish act. And in "The Rewrite," as he plays a spoiled screenwriter and one-hit Hollywood wonder on the skids, you can feel the strain as he goes through the routine one more time. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Feb 12, 2015

Fresh: It's far from perfect, but "The Rewrite" is the kind of witty, enjoyable star vehicle in sadly short supply on screens these days. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Feb 12, 2015

Fresh: It's the fourth collaboration between Grant and writer-director Marc Lawrence, and it could be their strongest outing to date. – Elizabeth Kerr, Hollywood Reporter, Feb 12, 2015

Fresh: Hanging out with Keith and Holly in this kindly, observant movie is a perfectly pleasant way to pass ninety-odd minutes. – Ella Taylor, NPR, Feb 12, 2015

Nothing over the top

This is certainly worth watching. Writing is clever and Hugh Grant is as usual delivering sarcastic and insightful lines as only Hugh can. Nothing is overly done considering a lot of the characters are extremes of themselves. This film had me laughing and feeling warm and fuzzy.

I really like it!

I wasn’t expecting much from this movie, but decided to give it a try anyways. What a pleasant surprise! It was actually a very fun movie! Not a over the top romantic comedy, but definitively worth watching!

Really loved this movie...

Saw this trailer a week ago... Was interested... Saw it was for sale... Purchased... Watched one surprisingly good film...!!! Maybe I am a tad bit too close to the subject material... You guys nailed the feelings of most over forty writers... Trying to remember what it was like to be relevant to the Hollywood system...
