Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Documentarian R.J. Cutler, in his feature debut, joins Moretz in delivering this pap as if it meant something. Cue eye rolling.
Rotten: The title refers to Mia's fraught decision-should she cling to existence or just give up?-and, well before the end, even loyal viewers will be begging her to hurry up and choose.
Rotten: Maybe on the page this all seems less ridiculous.
Rotten: What works for readers, left free to produce their own versions of fantasy devices, can be gigglesome for audiences confronted with a film's prefab literalism.
If i stay
If I Stay is the best movie I have ever seen and is better then The Fault in our Stars.
Best movie I have seen
I loved this movie so much! It was great, very well written, and had some "cliff hanger" moments!
I totally recommend it!
Powerful film with a worthwhile message...
This is one of those movies that I've been itching to see ever since the first trailer came out, and I was eager to head to the theater on opening weekend. A lot of people seem to be saying this is better than "The Fault in our Stars," and while I agree it was very entertaining, I wouldn't go that far. What made "Stars" so fantastic was the natural chemistry and dialogue between the lead characters--two very talented actors whose interactions gave us time to understand exactly what they appreciated about one another, therefore making the viewer like them that much more. "If I Stay" has a compelling storyline for sure, and while the cast was decent (Chloe Grace Moretz actually resembles a young Rachel McAdams), I didn't feel like her acting had much magic or spark to it. It was average at best. As for the romance between the teenagers, it seemed very bland and boring, and ultimately, I really didn't care about where their relationship went or why it even mattered in the first place. I found myself frustrated at all the "back and forth" with them, to the point where I was just waiting for it to be over. That said, Mia's interactions with her family carried a lot more emotional weight (her scenes with her grandfather were especially touching), and her struggles to find her purpose in life, despite being a bit cliched at times, were definitely relatable. Overall, it was a great story and worth seeing again, but I still don't think it compares to "The Fault in our Stars."
