About the Movie
The ultimate Italian road comedy, Il Sorpasso stars the unlikely pair of Vittorio Gassman and Jean-Louis Trintignant as, respectively, a waggish, free-wheeling bachelor and the bookish law student he takes on a madcap trip from Rome to rural Southern Italy. An unpredictable journey that careers from slapstick to tragedy, this film, directed by Dino Risi, is a wildly entertaining commentary on the pleasures and consequences of the good life. A holy grail of commedia all’italiana, Il Sorpasso is so fresh and exciting that one can easily see why it has long been adored in Italy.

Fresh: When I first saw it 25 years ago, I couldn't wait to see it again right away. I've been waiting ever since.
Fresh: It's a sunny, lazy day in early-1960s Rome - the city is "like a graveyard," with everyone away on holiday.
Fresh: Yes, the frame is filled with the era's bikini-clad pulchritude, but the fuel here is primo neurosis.

An excellent movie. Gassman at his best.
Most inane movie I have ever seen in my 73 years. Nothing much happens contrary to what the trailer led me to believe. The dialogue is silly and the plot pointless.
Ahead of its time
Could have been the plot of a movie today. Worth watching.
