About the Movie
In Between Men follows four friends in NYC. They are successful, professional men not defined by their sexuality. Through wild adventures, racy shorelines, joys and pains, underscored by the pulse of New York City, In Between Men examines the relationships the men have between each other, their lovers, and the greater community.
In Between Men
As an avid movie lover and gay man, I am often disappointed by the quality of "gay movies". That is why I was thrilled by this film. The quality of writing, acting and all around production value is head and shoulder above most I have seen. I found the approach to story telling to be fresh and atypical. It was nice to see stories and relationships that I was proud to have represent my community. And on a shallow note, the cast wasn't bad to look at. I can't recommend this film more enough.
Completely lacking authenticity
It's barely watchable despite the very high production values and the teasing site of hunky, bare bodies. The director seems to have no idea how people really behave. All of the characters seem the same, and it's impossible to imagine they have inner lives. It's all surface, peppy, predictable.
Not the Worst Thing I’ve Ever Seen...
But definitely not the best either. From a completely shallow standpoint, the show gains a lot of it’s watchability mainly because the leads are so attractive and pleasing to look at. But other than a few other small things, that’s about all the show’s got going for it.
The writing is the biggest problem. The show is clearly trying to be a gay Sex in the City, which is fine if it wasn’t pulling from every stereotypical storyline possible in order to cobble together a story. The dialogue needs a lot of work, and some of the characters need to be fleshed out a little more in order to make them more relatable. For the most part, the acting is pretty bad, but having seen some of the actors in different projects, it seems like this is a case of them doing the best they can with the material they’re stuck with.
All in all, if you want an hour of eye candy, then for six bucks you could do a lot worse. The cinematography is great and the images are clear, and the lead’s bodies in HD are probably beautiful to behold. But if you’re looking for some deep, thought provoking, or fun, frivolity, you should try other shows like The Outs.
