About the Movie
Philippe Garrel's In the Shadow of Women takes a close look at infidelity. Stanislas Merhar and Clotilde Courau are Pierre and Manon, a Parisian married couple working in fragile harmony on Pierre’s documentary film projects, the latest of which is a portrait of a resistance fighter (Jean Pommier). When Pierre takes a lover (Lena Paugam), he feels entitled to do so, and he treats both wife and mistress with disengagement bordering on disdain; when Manon catches Pierre in the act, her immediate response is to find common ground with her husband.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mr. Garrel is always worth attending to when he takes up the rhythms and paradoxes of love, and even though this is a minor entry in his canon of melancholy romances, it is brief, brisk and intermittently affecting.
Fresh: Is marital fidelity possible when you're bohemian, French and a character in a Philippe Garrel movie? Offering further evidence to the contrary is the director's latest broody musing on life, art and l'amour.
Fresh: Initially somewhat wispy-feeling, this 72-minute feature transforms in its final reel from an ironic divertissement to a work of considerable feeling and intensity.
Fresh: In so shrewdly exploring the illusions - namely (self-) deception - required to keep a dyad functioning, Garrel shows just how much we all remain, consciously or not, in the dark.
