STEVEN SPIELBERG and GEORGE LUCAS bring you the greatest adventurer of all time in “a nonstop thrill ride” (Richard Corliss, TIME) that’s packed with “sensational, awe-inspiring spectacles” (Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES). Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finds Indy (Harrison Ford) trying to outrace a brilliant and beautiful agent (Cate Blanchett) for the mystical, all-powerful crystal skull of Akator. Teaming up with a rebellious young biker (Shia LaBeouf) and his spirited original love Marion (Karen Allen), Indy takes you on an action-packed adventure in the exciting tradition of the classic Indiana Jones movies!

Rotten: Crystal Skull isn't bad -- there are a few dazzling sequences, and a couple of good performances -- but the unprecedented blend of comedy and action that made the movies so much more fun than any other adventure series is mostly gone.
Fresh: Even as the movie occasionally trips over its nostalgias, it's still a likable, if unremarkable, entertainment, a pleasant echo of past delights.
Fresh: There's nothing but entertainment value here.
Fresh: If you want to wonder who built two twin roads through the Amazon, or how come Indy and his troop survive not one but three trips over the waterfall without a bruise, then go to another movie.
This movie was terrible!
Raiders, awesome. Temple... well, less awesome, but Last Crusade was a fantastic movie.. These are movies I saw when I was young and still like now, so the appeal isn't purely nostalgia... so when I saw Kingdom.. oh god, I can't even go on. They nuked the fridge on this one, guys. If you like Indy, save your money and your opinion of the franchise from certain destruction.. But the cheese is too thick, the acting is too tired, and one things Indy doesn't mix well with is the X-Files. Screw Lucas and Spielburg... first Star Wars, then Indy. They must be stopped before they do something else, whatever it may be.
Could have been great
Unfortunately, too many people got involved with this film's script. What resulted was a watered down, confusing mess. Indy's motives are often unclear, the villain is non-threatening, and as a result there is zero tension throughout. Often things happen for no reason at all. If you want to see what happens when you take a great character and franchise, and butcher the script, then get this movie. Everyone seemed to be so thrilled about getting into the costumes, they forgot to make the movie.
It's Not the Years, it's the Milage...
I mentioned in an earlier review that VANTAGE POINT is the only action movie you'll ever need. I lied. VANTAGE POINT and INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL are the only two action films you will ever need to see or own. They both cover a different sort of action ground; VANTAGE POINT covers the thriller/car chase/CIA/modern blow-'em-up film, while INDIANA JONES is, well, come on, he's Indiana Jones! What makes this films so great is each over-the-top action piece after the next. And to those who complain that this film is so far beyond the realm of realism that it would have made more sense if it was staged on Neptune and starred Godzilla, I have this to say: get over it! Who, cares that Indy survives a nuclear explosion in a fridge? Who cares that he survived going over three water falls in a row? Who cares that this film has aliens? I will grant, though, that the infamous swinging with monkey stunt did cross the line. However, it is these unrealistic action pieces that makes this film so fun to watch. After three outings with the "archealogist", we should know what to expect, and he delivers. I'm not saying that CRYSTAL SKULL lives up to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, but it's still darn fun. And that's really what these films are all about: sitting back and letting Spielburg do the talking. I was just happy that Indy was back in fine shape. So I'll take this over TEMPLE OF DOOM any day, killer ants, aliens, and all. CONTENT: Many over-the-top action violence scenes, including some somewhat brutal fist fights, sci-fi damage and some disturbing deaths (big killer ants, undead natives, etc.); some grotesque images and moments (killer ants, undead natives, dead mummies, etc.); some crude language and mild profanity; brief mild innuendo (mainly reffering to Indy's womanizing past. I mean, come on! The guy's in his sixties now. How bad could it be?). WHO: younger teen and up.
