About the Movie

Based on Philip Roth's late novel, Indignation takes place in 1951, as Marcus Messner, a brilliant working class Jewish boy from Newark, New Jersey, travels on scholarship to a small, conservative college in Ohio, thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. But once there, Marcus's growing infatuation with his beautiful classmate Olivia Hutton, and his clashes with the college's imposing Dean, Hawes Caudwell, put his and his family's best laid plans to the ultimate test.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This is one helluva compelling film that presents us with several of the very best performances of the year. – Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun-Times, Aug 4, 2016

Fresh: The most striking moment is a quietly fierce monologue from the boy's mother (veteran character actress Linda Emond) in which she talks him down from marrying the fragile young woman. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Aug 4, 2016

Rotten: Despite its pluses, "Indignation" often plays like a heavy handed after-school special. It's not so much indignant as it is tedious. – Adam Graham, Detroit News, Aug 12, 2016

Fresh: With its mature perspective on distant formative years, the film feels true to the spirit of Roth; little from the deep wellsprings of the great novelist's fiction is lost in translation. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Aug 8, 2016
