Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Is there a point to this spew, a cry against the mongrel violence of men? Or is Noe merely a sadist who enjoys inflicting ugly, pitiless images on his audience? – Edward Guthmann, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Noe's summation is an ideological sucker-punch from a filmmaker who gets off on abusive relationships. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A genuine outlaw work of art. – Stephen Hunter, Washington Post, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The reverse chronology makes Irreversible a film that structurally argues against rape and violence, while ordinary chronology would lead us down a seductive narrative path toward a shocking, exploitative payoff. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jun 24, 2010

My wife worked at a video rental place and when this movie came out, so many people complained about how graphic it was they took it off the shelf. We watched it and I thought it was a masterpiece. So many cheezy movies out there it was nice to see a hardcore piece of art. The world we live in is violent and those who have money to hide inside your homes and pretend life is like reality shows, I recommend Americas Top Model or Dancing with The Stars!!!

Spell-Binding and Disturbing

Vibrantly directed, amazing use of dark colors and a haunting ability to never turn the camera away from the most grotesque of mankinds acts makes this movie a triumph of direction, creativity, and powerful storytelling.

Great Movie!

There's a tendency in American movies to glamorize violence. Europeans don't do that and by doing so, they are able to convey more human emotion in movie on a level that US filmakers can only dream of. The evokes the technical filmaking as done in "Memento" and does an excellent character portrayal akin to "The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover." It's raw... it's provoking... it's done so well that US viewer will find it rare. ;) Vincent Cassel and Monica Belucci (spelling?) are great and believable. Enjoy... but it's not for the squeamish, but make 'em watch anyway!
