Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Is there a point to this spew, a cry against the mongrel violence of men? Or is Noe merely a sadist who enjoys inflicting ugly, pitiless images on his audience?
Rotten: Fails because of its gratuitous rape and violence and also because of its pretentious and intellectually one-dimensional grounds, which make the violence at the end feel even worse.
Fresh: A genuine outlaw work of art.
Fresh: Extremely difficult to endure, and if you choose to endure it, it could leave you feeling angry and upset. Nevertheless, this is serious filmmaking, and Noe is a gifted filmmaker.
My wife worked at a video rental place and when this movie came out, so many people complained about how graphic it was they took it off the shelf. We watched it and I thought it was a masterpiece. So many cheezy movies out there it was nice to see a hardcore piece of art. The world we live in is violent and those who have money to hide inside your homes and pretend life is like reality shows, I recommend Americas Top Model or Dancing with The Stars!!!
Spell-Binding and Disturbing
Vibrantly directed, amazing use of dark colors and a haunting ability to never turn the camera away from the most grotesque of mankinds acts makes this movie a triumph of direction, creativity, and powerful storytelling.
Violence on women as if is an Olympic sport. It is a sadistic, vile, pathetic movie.
This film is ridiculous. The graphic violence is intended as pulp cinematography. They missed the mark. It is basically a T&A movie with extreme violence as been stylistic. It was one of the most senseless movies I’ve even seen. It portrays violence on women as if it is an Olympic sport. Don’t waste your time with this movie. It is nothing more than a sadistic, vile, pathetic movie.
