About the Movie

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) and Academy Award winner Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love) star in acclaimed director Cary Fukunaga’s daring new adaptation of the timeless romance. When orphaned governess Jane Eyre (Wasikowska) arrives at imposing Thornfield Hall, she’s intrigued by her brooding wealthy employer, Rochester (Fassbender). His dark moods and the strange occurrences in the house lead her to discover a terrible secret that he had hoped to hide from her forever. Critics proclaim this captivating, sensual film is “Beautiful. A splendid example of how to turn a beloved work of classic literature into a movie.” (A.O. Scott, The New York Times)

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: If the motion-picture industry had existed in 1847, the year Charlotte Bronte's novel appeared, it might have produced an adaptation much like this one. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Apr 7, 2011

Fresh: Screenwriter Moira Buffini sticks pretty closely to the novel, and director Cary Fukunaga conjures a drab tone that nicely sets off the characters' violent but rigidly controlled passions. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Dec 13, 2011

Fresh: By opening their movie with the mature Jane, the filmmakers forge an emotional bond between her and the audience. – Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer, Mar 24, 2011

Fresh: Somehow Wasikowska makes it all seem much more personal, more real. With her stark, starched dresses and blunt, elastic face, she draws you in, making both Jane's pain and incredible resolve tangible. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Mar 25, 2011

So boring, I want to shoot myself.

I would rather have acid poured in my eyes. The book is just as bad. Typical Hollywood crap to make a book into a movie.

0 stars better fits this film.

I have to read this book for summer reading. I wish the movie was out already so i could watch it instead.

I loved this movie. I have seen other versions and by far this one tops them all!
