About the Movie
Janis Joplin was one of the world’s most influential rock icons and a goddess of sound, but there was far more to her than that. Academy® Award nominated director Amy Berg strips away Janis’ rock ‘n roll persona to reveal the gentle, trusting, sensitive, but powerful woman behind the legend, in the quintessential story of the short, turbulent, and epic existence that changed music forever. Interviews paint a new, intimate portrait of Janis the woman. Through turbulent and tormented love affairs, and stretches of drugs and sobriety, one constant remained: Janis was committed to her music above all until her heartbreaking demise and death at the age of 27.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Sweet and wild and vividly alive, she takes a little piece of your heart when she goes.
Fresh: Documentary filmmaker Amy Berg (West of Memphis, Prophet's Prey) has made an elegant, affectionate and, in many ways, remarkably cheerful film about Janis Joplin.
Fresh: From this pastiche Joplin emerges as we've never seen her before, articulate, ambitious, torn between her wild self and her desperate need for stability.
Fresh: This is a meticulously researched film that makes good use of its incredible access.

Pretty much perfect
Janis still rocks
Anyone who loves '60s music should see this documentary. Janis was a music pioneer in so many ways, but most notably was her willingness to follow her heart. The rich texture of this documentary underscores her talents, accomplishments, and drive to be true to herself. It is so well constructed that you feel you knew her personally. The interviews with family, friends and other musicians are beautifully done. Watching this documentary solidified my feeling that Janis and her music should never be forgotten. P
