About the Movie

Beginning before the Nativity and extending though the Crucifixion and Resurrection, "Jesus of Nazareth" brings to life all the majesty and sweeping drama of the life of Jesus (portrayed here by Robert Powell) as told in the Gospels. A star-studded cast featuring Michael York, Sir Laurence Olivier, James Earl Jones, Anne Bancroft, Olivia Hussey, Rod Steiger and Anthony Quinn, adds depth and humanity to the roles of the saints, sinners and ordinary people who walked in the footsteps of the Lord. The film provides the setting and background for the birth, childhood, baptism, teaching, and many miracles of the Messiah, culminating in the Divine Resurrection. Directed by Oscar(R) nominee Franco Zeffirelli ("Romeo & Juliet", "The Champ", "Jane Eyre", "Endless Love") and acclaimed by critics and religious leaders worldwide, "Jesus of Nazareth" tells the greatest of all stories with tremendous emotion and splendor.

The Best by far

This movie is the standard as far as the life of Jesus. 13 or more major movie stars, so talent is everywhere. All the key parts are played realistically . Ernest Bordanine, and Rod Stieger perform particularly well, 1977 was still a big cinema year. I can't say enough about this movie, as a Christian. This an Rocky are my two favs of all time.

Surprise of this genre

I didn’t expect much, but was it was powerful and surprisingly moving. Biblical epics are so literal that all mystery and majesty are usually drained away. Not here. Take the context of the parable of the prodigal son, which is told by Jesus at Matthew the tax collector’s house. Peter won’t come inside lest, in his own mind, he will be defiled. Powell as Jesus tells the story and the resulting effect on cast and moviegoer is the same is a kind of ah ha experience. As an epic, it reminds me of the old saying, that, at sea, to see the distant horizon, you have to look above where you think it might be in order to find it. The movie actually lets you discover something of who Jesus is and how big beyond imagining, the love of God for all people, actually is.

Sincere and powerful

Today’s biblical epic’s try to make a superhero to appeal to a generation addicted to larger than life visuals without meaning or emotion. This movie is the opposite. For the first time in 1080p, this version cannot be matched nor outdone.
