In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit "Journey to the Center of the Earth," the new family adventure "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" begins when 17-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first film) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. It's a place of stunning beauty, strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from tracking the signal to its source, Sean's new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest that will take them first to the South Pacific, and then to a place few people have ever seen. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luiz Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The usual escape-before-the-big-blast stuff ensues, augmented by some fairly tedious family dynamics.
Rotten: Blithely idiotic...
Fresh: Don't expect anything resembling believability, but enjoy the blend of strikingly colorful visuals and banter between odd couple Johnson and Caine, which combine for a mild escapist treat.
Fresh: Harkens back to so-bad-they're-fun '70s children's epics like "At the Earth's Core" and "The Land That Time Forgot."
A FUN ADVENTURE FILM THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN ENJOY!
When it comes to a movie like "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island", there's really no sense in criticizing every little detail about it. Sure, the acting is mediocre and the premise is cartoonish beyond belief, but nevertheless, it's just about as enjoyable as its predecessor. For the most part, the characters are likable, the CG visuals are strikingly colorful and even the special effects are delightfully campy. Case in point, you can obviously tell that the giant rocks in the film are made of Styrofoam, but that just adds to the wildly inane experience. It doesn't even really matter that the story is intentionally predictable and the kid-friendly jokes are hit and miss. My family and I had a blast watching it from beginning to end. In fact, it almost felt as if I was watching an old Saturday morning live-action TV show like "Land of the Lost" at times. I guess most of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes didn't like the movie because of its formulaic, by-the-numbers layout, but then again, who cares what they think? As silly and clichéd as it may be, "Journey 2" is a harmlessly satisfying adventure-comedy that'll entertain kid, tween and adult viewers alike with its charming all-star cast, eye-popping imagery and fun-filled action. If you get the chance, go ahead and rent this flick for the whole family to watch. But before you do so, I recommend checking out the first film in the franchise: "Journey to the Center of the Earth". It doesn't exactly connect to the story of this sequel, but it's still a great family-friendly thrill ride that's worth seeing.
