Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: If "Joy" seems to move toward a foreordained conclusion, it zigzags and covers its tracks along the way, sending its heroine on a roller-coaster ride of raised hopes and brutal disappointments and playing tricks with the audience's expectations. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Dec 25, 2015

Rotten: Lawrence ... thrives here, but even her skill and determination can't stabilize a film that goes off in any number of directions and rarely feels confident about the kind of story it wants to be telling. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Dec 24, 2015

Rotten: Russell is almost totally uninterested in the story of how Joy Mangano explored a bizarre and unknown new business model and became its first self-made tycoon, and as a result we aren't interested either. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jan 3, 2016

Fresh: The movie's a shambles, alternatingly agreeable and aggravating, held together by our interest in its heroine and by Lawrence's tremendously sympathetic performance. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jan 3, 2016

One of the best movies of 2015

Jennifer's acting in Joy was amazing. While watching the movie, I actually felt as if she was the real Joy and that I was watching the real Joy live out her life. Bradley isn't in it very much and only comes in during the second half but he's great when he has his screen time. The overall storyline is great. The movie is funny, dramatic, and definitely inspirational. If you have not seen it already I definitely recommend you do. Jennifer's performance was fantastic.

David o russell is losing it

The fighter and silver linings playbook were amazing. American hustle was ok. Joy is terrible. The characters are unlikable and unlike other david o russell movies uninteresting. The story is equally dull and the tone constantly changes. Unlike past russell movies, the dialogue is clunky and poorly written. The last 20 minutes take this film from bad to terrible by wrapping everything up in montages instead of a way that's relatable. There are no stakes because once there is a problem, it's immediately solved. Only positive is JLaw whose performance is buried by everything else.

Loved it!

This movie is Oscar-Worthy!!! J Law was so amazing!!!
