Meryl Streep is Julia Child and Amy Adams is Julie Powell in writer-director Nora Ephron's adaptation of two bestselling memoirs: Powell's Julie & Julia and My Life in France, by Julia Child with Alex Prud'homme. Based on two true stories, Julie & Julia intertwines the lives of two women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends...until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Half-baked comedy barely whets the appetite.
Fresh: Like a beautiful home cooked meal, Julie & Julia is not perfect by industry standards, just warm, comforting and very, very enjoyable.
Fresh: Julie & Julia is a highly polished piece of upmarket entertainment, brimming with beautiful interiors. If you throw in the lavish helpings of food porn it's almost like a colour supplement come to life.
Fresh: What makes this film memorable and pleasurable, above all, is the ebullient performance of Meryl Streep as Julia Child, unlikely culinary trailblazer and TV star.
juile & julia
So I thought it was going to be a slow movie but I was wrong. It is fuuny and great. One thing I didn't really like is for some reason Child din't like juila and they didn't say why. my grade. A
Watched this movie on a flight from Houston to Portland. Started out slow but picked up and ended up being pretty good. The contrast of old(Streep) and new(Adams) kept things interesting. I would recommend it.
the julia child in france half of the film was shot in a syrupy disney musical style that was just nauseating and had nothing to do with the reality of post-war paris or with the tone of her memoirs. meryl streep's scenery chewing performance will make you wince with embarrassment. the lone highlight of those acts was stanley tucci as the loving husband to julia child's larger than life character. though hardly possible, the new york half was even worse. at least the french scenes were ridiculous but mildly entertaining. the julie story was as oppressively boring as you can imagine a movie based on a blog would be. cue the neurotic charmingly clumsy ingenue having cute nervous breakdowns due to kitchen disasters. cue the cardboard cutout boyfriend with no personality whose only role is as prop to unfunny scenes about urban neuroses. the film jumps from one setting to another, from julie to julia, without any actual reason or dramatic contrast, leaving the viewer to wonder why on earth these two stories were told in one movie. the connections are so artificially manufactured that you stop caring about either story half-way through. add to all of this the fact that this is ostensibly a movie about food yet the food was barely featured and when it appeared it was hideously styled (think yellowing 1972 jello mold cookbook). not only is it a poorly conceived film which will bore you to tears at least 50% of the time but it's just plain ugly. don't bother.
