About the Movie

A gripping nonfiction thriller, Robert Greene’s KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE follows actress Kate Lyn Sheil ("House of Cards," LISTEN UP PHILIP) as she prepares for her next role: playing Christine Chubbuck, a Florida newscaster who committed a shocking act on live TV in 1974. As Kate investigates Chubbuck’s story (long rumored to be the inspiration for the classic Hollywood film NETWORK), uncovering new clues and information, she becomes increasingly obsessed with her subject. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE is a cinematic mystery that forces us to question everything we see and everything we’re led to believe.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Muses intriguingly about the boundaries between actors playing themselves and fictional characters in front of a camera. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Aug 23, 2016

Fresh: Robert Greene's performance-based documentary on Christine Chubbuck is an ingenious, knowingly frustrating provocation. – Guy Lodge, Variety, Jan 30, 2016

Fresh: "Kate Plays Christine" makes for a twisty, unsettling probe into our fascination with transforming lives, and deaths, into digestible storytelling. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Sep 15, 2016

Rotten: Greene's strategy is to be ironically inept: His nonfiction wanderings with Sheil feel halfhearted, but the attempts at scenes dramatizing Chubbuck are intentionally awful, staged like amateur soap opera and written in cheap cliches. – Michael Atkinson, Village Voice, Aug 23, 2016

Customer Reviews

Groundbreaking

Hands down one of the best films of 2016.

Depressing

Price is too high for the content
And poor acting . Not working with much here. This needs to go on the 99cent rental list quick.

Nothing To See Here

It starts slow, then gets slower, and finally, eventually, it just ends.
