About the Movie

Brandon, fifteen, saves up his money to buy a brand new pair of kicks, hoping that these shoes will help him get the respect and attention he deserves. He spends the next day basking in the newfound glory of these dream shoes. But this glory is short-lived when Brandon is attacked in a parking lot and the shoes are stolen right off his feet. Angry and humiliated, Brandon decides to fight back and ventures into the tough streets of East Oakland along with his two best friends, to recover the kicks. They have the night of their lives, both thrilling and terrifying, and Brandon has to grow up fast as he comes to terms with himself and the world around him. Kicks – a coming-of-age story is the debut feature for director Justin Tipping. A previous AFI graduate and director of the acclaimed short film Nani.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The characters have enough dimension to avoid appearing to be symbols of a social tragedy, and the movie's relative gentleness makes the harsher realities of Brandon's world all the more distressing. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Sep 8, 2016

Fresh: This is a debut of undeniable promise, both for its director and its largely unknown cast. – Andrew Barker, Variety, Apr 26, 2016

Fresh: "Kicks" is that kind of fascinatingly uneven indie only children of gritty urban life know how to make when they're ready to pick up a camera and engage with their past. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Sep 8, 2016

Rotten: It doesn't really add up, either as a psychological portrait or moral commentary. – Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle, Sep 7, 2016

Dope movie!

Amazing

I've been beyond excited to see "Kicks" since I first saw the trailer months ago. Then comes the limited release to theaters and another month of waiting! I will say though, it was worth the wait for me. The main plot revolves around a smaller than average high school kid who goes on a dangerous mission to retrieve his stolen pair of treasured Jordan's. Yet this film showcases and explores much deeper ideas than the plot suggests. If by the end of this all you got out of it was "all this for the shoes?" You need to watch it again and again until you feel the true meaning and inspiration behind this film. From beginning to end you are immediately taken aback by first time Director Justin Tipping's structure and vision for this film. It feels like no other film you've seen, yet this concept has somewhat been explored in other "hood" movies throughout the years. The narration by main character Brandon (Jahking Guillory) flows perfectly with the score and sometimes repetitive slow motion scenes we see throughout. Brandon's two best friends, Rico and Albert had their own authentic personalities and didn't feel like the cliche cool guy friend and the dumb friend; very well executed. But quite possibly my favorite character in the film is the villain Flaco, played by Kofi Siriboe. This guy not only held the strongest presence on screen in the film but he felt like a real person and you saw his emotion and his reasoning for what he does. He has a huge future after this film I believe. The scene to scene flow here was above average to me, nothing felt forced or rushed, and the story played out unexpectedly in my eyes which is a big plus. With Kicks you are getting a film that is perfect in the times America is in right now, a film that is a nod to "Boyz N the Hood" and "Menace II Society" etc. a comedy reminiscent of last years indie hit "Dope" and an all around new and fresh stand alone possible modern classic, Kicks gets an 8.8/10
