Rotten: Our response to the ape's doom, once touched by authentic tragedy, is now marked by relief that this wretchedly excessive movie is finally over.
Fresh: Good things do come in big packages. The trick for any filmmaker is to find the small movie within the big one, which is exactly what Peter Jackson does in King Kong.
Fresh: Kong is a showy, state-of-the-art popcorn movie, faithful to the spirit of the 1933 original but generously adrenalized with the best effects money can buy.
Fresh: One hundred eighty-seven minutes of mesmerization, astonishment, thrills, chills, spills, kills and ills, Peter Jackson's big monkey picture show is certainly the best popular entertainment of the year.
I know that some people say it is too long, but I did not care because this film stayed true to the original film (I hope Apple places it on iTunes soon). This is what awesome means. I hope that anyone who sees this movie can enjoy it as much as I have.
Wish These Extra Scenes Were In The Original Version!
Great movie and usually stuff that's cut out is for a good reason not these scenes they're awesome! More dinos and creatures and more kong!
The extra scenes detract from the original releases quality, especially the pace...
King Kong (2005) is not only a great remake that adheres to what made the 1933 original a classic, but also a great film; however, this Extended Version seems like a cheap ploy to rake in more cash and milk the kind of immense success The Lord of the Rings trilogy's Extended Editions had in terms of quality and quantity. The King Kong Extended Version just doesn't add much of anything new (save for a cool swamp monster scene, and a comedic moment between some army men) and the end result comes off as a bloated production, and completely rips the film's pace to shreds -- which many moviegoers had already laid criticism with the original release's run time and somewhat tedious first 50-minutes. All in all though, the original cut remains the better version, simply because the story remains intact without some random monster attack or additional dialogue thrown into the mix to appease fans. It's just not coherent enough, but worth a watch.
