L.A. Confidential is "tough, gorgeous and vastly entertaining" (James Maslin, The New York Times) and won 1997 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Kim Basinger) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Brian Helgeland & Curtis Hanson). Three cops, a call girl, a mysterious millionaire, a tabloid journalist fuel a labyrinthine plot rife with mystery, ambition, romance and humor.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: With its plot that zigs and zags like knife slashes, its cynicism stoked to the melting point, the movie brings the thrill of corruption crackingly to life.
Fresh: Against all odds, L.A. Confidential succeeds brilliantly, right down to Jerry Goldsmith's score, which evokes his haunting theme from Chinatown without being haunted by it.
Fresh: An irresistible treat with enough narrative twists and memorable characters for a half-dozen films.
Fresh: Its intricate plot is so nihilistic and cold around the heart, its nominal heroes so amoral, so willing to sell out anyone and everyone, that the film is as initially unnerving as it is finally irresistible.
nothing short of brilliant
Simply one of the best films ever made
The fans are right - this is one of the best ever
OK, I'm just one fan, but the more times I watch this movie, the more times I am amazed by it - arguably more than any other film. For me, watching it 2-3 times many years ago, my minor gripe (amidst overwhelming appreciation) was this - it seemed to have too many subplots. The revelation for me, over (years more of ) time, was the underlying simplicity of what was actually going on. I'm not normally that slow to appreciate deeper aspects of films, but this film did it - it kicked my butt. Films that can do that are very few and far between, making ownership a great value. (grins). Many great actors here, all of them enthralling, but Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is staggering in this film. My two cents.
