About the Movie

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A heartfelt coming-of-age story that perfectly captures the bittersweet transition from adolescence to dawning adulthood... – April Wolfe, Village Voice, Dec 1, 2017

Fresh: Gerwig finds a warmer part of herself when, unencumbered by any lab partner, she returns to her hometown with Lady Bird. One can only hope that, this time, she stays. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Nov 30, 2017

Fresh: The film is not so much a coming-of-age story...[it] aims for a deeper truth, being that life's most important lessons come incrementally, in small, touching moments, something Lady Bird comes to appreciate, however reluctantly. – Jim Schembri, 3AW, Feb 16, 2018

Fresh: Lady Bird's depiction of the intense and difficult relationship between a commonsense mother and her whimsical daughter is pitch perfect in its mix of love, disappointment and resentment. – Rochelle Siemienowicz,, Feb 16, 2018

Lady Bird

This film is a very funny, but very honest movie about a girl living in California.
The concept is simple, but through the exceptional writing and directing from Greta Gerwig, excellent perfomances from Saoirse Ronan and Lucas Hedges, this movie is a real delightful treat. It actually caught me a bit off guard at how it made me feel. It felt real, which is comendable to say the least. I can say I love this movie, and I will watch it again, because it's an experience that people should watch to understand what goes in within people's lives. Plus, if you wanna be a screenwriter, take note here, because the dialogue feels really real. This movie is not for everyone, that's a given, but you should at least give it a chance, I know I did.

Beautifully Written, Acted, and Directed

Lady Bird is a beautiful movie about a girl from Sacramento (the Midwest of California) who is wanting more out of life, and to get out of Sacramento. Greta Gerwig wrote a truly exceptional script, and Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan were incredible in their mother/daughter relationship. This has quickly become one of my favorite movies. Thank you, Greta, for writing this about our hometown!

This film was a 100% true joy to experience. The heartfelt and truthfulness of the film boosts it's likableness—though it is hard to dislike this film.
