Rotten: By the grand finale, when tout le monde is waving the French tricolor in victory, you may instead be raising the white flag in exhausted defeat. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Dec 25, 2012

Fresh: If you like your musicals enormous, over the top and bang-on-the-head manipulative, "Les Miserables" is the movie for you. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Dec 25, 2012

Fresh: Ultimately the film's choppy, camera-goes-anywhere approach works well in translating a play that was never all that interested in the movement of bodies anyway-only their martyrdom. – Michael Koresky, Film Comment Magazine, Nov 5, 2013

Fresh: At the end of 158 minutes, you really have experienced something. What exactly, I'm still not sure. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Jan 10, 2013

Wondering If You Should Buy This Movie?

If you are wondering if you should buy this movie, then I will be brief because you have probablly skimmed through several comments already. This movie is fantastic. I don't like to see musicals all the time, but the story more than compensates, even though pretty much 99% of the script is sung. It far out does the play versions of it. Hugh Jackman, Ann Hathaway, Russell Crowe, and Samantha Barks all do EXCELLENT JOBS, and will surprise you (especially Russel Crowe) with their voices. I'm not paid by Apple to say this, and I'm not talking the movie up. It is definitely worth it.

My only grievance: Hugh Jackman's voice is not exactly the best, and (at times) can tend to wear on you, but honestly I can't think of anything else. Haha.

Everything a Les Miserables fan could want and more

I went in to this movie skeptical. Could it possibly live up to the high expectations that the musical set? And the answer is an emphatic Yes! Tom Hooper's production of Les Miserables is one of the most impressive feats I have witnessed on film. Unlike traditional filmed musicals, Les Miserables is sung live. This allows for some extremely powerful performances, particularly Hathaway as Fantine. While some may gripe at the extensive use of close-ups, I for one felt that it only magnified the performances. While Russell Crowe should probably not try out for Idol, his singing compliments his characters style. Overall I cannot recommend this movie enough! A+
