Rotten: By the grand finale, when tout le monde is waving the French tricolor in victory, you may instead be raising the white flag in exhausted defeat.
Fresh: If you like your musicals enormous, over the top and bang-on-the-head manipulative, "Les Miserables" is the movie for you.
Fresh: Ultimately the film's choppy, camera-goes-anywhere approach works well in translating a play that was never all that interested in the movement of bodies anyway-only their martyrdom.
Fresh: At the end of 158 minutes, you really have experienced something. What exactly, I'm still not sure.
Broadway it is not…..
I have seen Les Mis four times on Broadway. While I don't think any movie can come close to the power of a live musical, the movie adaptation of Les Miserables is very well done. For Broadway purists, a few songs are moved around in the movie and a couple are missing (Beggars at the Feast near the end comes immediately to mind). On the other hand, the movie moves along very well especially the first act (i.e. the first 1 hour and 40 minutes).
The musical performances by Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are simply terrific. Russell Crowe tries his best as Javert (and truth be told no other actor probably could have matched Jackman as Jean Valjean), although at times it is painful to watch him sing and miss his notes. Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter are simply wonderful in the roles of Msr. and Madame Thenadier, and the rest of the ensemble does very well. Broadway it is not, but now I can have Les Mis in my living room whenever I want for $15 from iTunes. Not a bad deal!!! And any movie that brings me to tears in a winner in my book! Plus my 10 year old loved seeing it in the movie theater with me and keeps playing "Master of the House" on her iPad. Can hardly wait four days more for it to come out on video!
All I can say is WOW! This is one of the best movies I have ever seen! All the actors sang and acted flawlessly (including Russell Crowe, despite what others may say). Anne Hathaway appears for about 20 minutes in the film, but they're pure gold. She really deserved her Oscar!
