About the Movie
This award-winning documentary tells the poignant story of Filipino-American Richard Adams and his Australian husband, Tony Sullivan, who in 1975, became one of the first same-sex couples to be legally married in the world. Limited Partnership recounts their 40-year struggle to stay together, and parallels the history of the LGBT marriage and immigration equality movements.
I just watched this documentary on PBS and was absolutely caught up in the struggle of these two brave men to stay together. I'm a 47 year-old straight married man old enough to remember when prejudice against gays was the norm, not even questioned. Two men in love was just wrong, period; you didn't even think about it. But Tony and Richard forced this country to START thinking about it, and when I was finished watching this amazing documentary I asked myself, Why the hell did we ever even CARE whether two people of the same sex want to get married? What business was it of ours? I can't even remember anymore why we used to object to it, or why the blatant, disgusting hatred toward gays was so blindly accepted for so long. This is a genuine love story, beautifully told, and it also happens to be a riveting tale about the courage and determination of two humans who stood up to injustice and triumphed over it.
