Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's Americana unvarnished and, because of that, as absorbing as it is respectful. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Nov 20, 2014

Fresh: Nate Larson's lensing is above documentary average, while first-time feature helmer Love's editing does an astute job of shaping the pic's first 45 minutes as an investigative mystery, leaving the post-arrest remainder for collective soul searching. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Nov 25, 2014

Fresh: The film's exploration of the tenuous bonds within a community will surely prompt serious soul-searching. – Martin Tsai, Los Angeles Times, Nov 26, 2014

Fresh: Theo Love's mesmerizing documentary Little Hope Was Arson is as evenhanded as it is unsettling. – Sam Weisberg, Village Voice, Nov 18, 2014

deeply biased

celebrates religious zealots, backwards thinking and prejudiced church / political groups who use the fires as further justification for their fight of ‘good' against 'the devil.’

In my opinion, when the youth turn against the false idols of their elders in these close-minded church communities... it’s a good sign.

You Could Call It Interesting...

...or you could call it what it really is: conservative, right-wing, religious propaganda. This is a very sad side of the world today.
