About the Movie
Taking fatherly advice is not in Joe Coughlin’s nature. Instead, the WWI vet is a self-proclaimed anti-establishment outlaw, despite being the son of the Boston Police Deputy Superintendent. Joe’s not all bad, though; in fact, he’s not really bad enough for the life he’s chosen. Unlike the gangsters he refuses to work for, he has a sense of justice and an open heart, and both work against him, leaving him vulnerable time and again—in business and in love. Driven by a need to right the wrongs committed against him and those close to him, Joe heads down a risky path that goes against his upbringing and his own moral code. Leaving the cold Boston winter behind, he and his reckless crew turn up the heat in Tampa. And while revenge may taste sweeter than the molasses that infuses every drop of illegal rum he runs, Joe will learn that it comes at a price.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Misgivings aside, I was enjoying Live by Night as a guilty pleasure of sorts and was on the verge of giving it a qualified recommendation until the last 10 minutes, which are equal parts predictable and way, way over the top.
Rotten: Affleck falls prey to the occupational hazard of wanting to create his own myth, as he produces, directs, writes and stars in a flaccid screen adaptation of Dennis Lehane's Prohibition-era crime novel.
Rotten: Here, the outlaw-as-hero trick just doesn't work; we can't both sympathize with Coughlin's moral quandaries and thrill to his crimes.
Rotten: Live by Night is meant to be an epic tale of crime, prejudice, and opportunism and how they collide with the myth of the American Dream. Too bad it never makes us care.
Italian and Irish mafias going toe to toe in Miami during Prohibition. This movie has style.
This movie is absolutely stunning to look at and its vibe will pull you in and won't let go. I also didn't have a problem with the story line or acting. Both very good. If you get a chance to watch it and are into mafia / noir stories from the 20/30's go for it!
Fantastic movie loved every min of it. I would most definitely recommend this to everyone!
