About the Movie

A sweltering hot day in Massachusetts, 1892, is pierced by the brutal double murder of Mr. and Mrs. Borden that would stun the nation. Lizzie (Christina Ricci), a wholesome Sunday school teacher and Mr. Borden's youngest daughter, quickly becomes the prime suspect. Now, as her lawyer Andrew Jennings (Billy Campbell) proclaims her innocence, the original good-girl-gone-bad will stand trial in one of the most gripping, gruesome mysteries of all time. Her name will forever live in infamy and the eerie children's rhyme will continue to haunt those that know the story, but the truth is anything but clear.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The movie ends on such a note as to cause the audience to wonder how long it will take before "A," of Pretty Little Liars fame, starts leaving Lizzie Borden an incriminating text or two. – Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times, Jan 27, 2014

Fresh: Lizzie Borden takes an ax to many assumptions -- including the one that Lifetime movies aren't worth watching. – Diane Werts, Newsday, Jan 24, 2014

Rotten: The movie itself apparently isn't sure the murders themselves are lurid enough. So it adds a few things that didn't happen, plus some 21st-century music. – David Hinckley, New York Daily News, Jan 27, 2014

Fresh: Christina Ricci does a haunting turn as notorious hatchet swinger Lizzie Borden. – Lori Rackl, Chicago Sun-Times, Jan 20, 2014

Based on a true story

You might enjoy this film if you have no idea what it is about. But with that said, I think they should have taken more artistic liberties to make it more suspenseful. Its mostly a court room drama, and a rather dry one at that. I think the actresses did a fine job and inserting the modern music kept it from being very stale. But even so the movie was ok, not at all scary or thrilling. Might inspire some people to actually read up on the historic details.
