About the Movie

One man demonstrates how to get rich selling warring nations the tools of their deadly trade in this dark comedy drama. Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage) is an opportunistic businessman who stumbled into a gold mine after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Huge caches of Soviet weapons became available at bargain prices (and even for free if one wasn't above stealing), and as literally billions of dollars' worth of Soviet military technology disappeared, it began finding its way into the hands of weapons dealers eager to sell it to the highest bidder. Orlov was one such dealer who found plenty of buyers for guns and military gear in unstable Third World nations, who paid cash and didn't appreciate too many questions. Orlov's exploits in the arms business quickly made him a very rich man, but they've also led to some unwanted attention from Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke), an Interpol agent who is convinced Orlov isn't playing by the rules. Inspired by a true story, Lord of War also features Jared Leto, Ian Holm, Bridget Moynahan, and Donald Sutherland.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The poison arrows of satire that writer-director Andrew Niccol aims at international arms dealing and the great powers who let it happen for their own gain -- the U.S. dangles prominently on Niccol's hook -- are frustratingly scattershot. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Mar 28, 2008

Fresh: Even though Niccol sometimes puts unnecessary homilies in the mouths of his characters, he mostly pulls off the tricky feat of being direct and breezy at the same time. "Lord of War" skims along like a dance routine. – Stephanie Zacharek,, Aug 2, 2016

Fresh: A raffishly ironic and insinuating movie -- and probably the most sheerly enjoyable film of the year so far. – David Denby, New Yorker, Sep 24, 2005

Fresh: Movies usually show bullets as if they're generic, anonymous masses of metal coming off a conveyor belt, while Lord of War wants us to see that each bullet is inscribed with somebody's name. – Jami Bernard, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

Actually pretty good

this movie seems like just another action-type movie, but it reall delves into the lives of te characters and their different emotions. Oh, and there's action.

A gem in my collection

I don't think the synopsis or trailer depict the movie accurately. It is darker toned but with some sad truths. Cage narrates his life from what seems he's not happy about. It's a lot like the movie Blow with Johnny Depp in terms of directing. The movie also has some great music in it. I believe it's worth watching at least once.

What An Amazing Movie

I am glad Nicholas Cage found a good role because this movie is incredible. You see what happens to Africa and other third world countries and how there is no solution to the problem of guns. This movie has violence, but the violence helps tell the story of men like him giving the poorest people on the earth the means to continue killing each other. Everything about this movie is great. For something incredible check out the Lord of War soundtrack it is amazing and never gets old to listen to, you won't be disapointed.
