About the Movie
One man demonstrates how to get rich selling warring nations the tools of their deadly trade in this dark comedy drama. Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage) is an opportunistic businessman who stumbled into a gold mine after the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Huge caches of Soviet weapons became available at bargain prices (and even for free if one wasn't above stealing), and as literally billions of dollars' worth of Soviet military technology disappeared, it began finding its way into the hands of weapons dealers eager to sell it to the highest bidder. Orlov was one such dealer who found plenty of buyers for guns and military gear in unstable Third World nations, who paid cash and didn't appreciate too many questions. Orlov's exploits in the arms business quickly made him a very rich man, but they've also led to some unwanted attention from Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke), an Interpol agent who is convinced Orlov isn't playing by the rules. Inspired by a true story, Lord of War also features Jared Leto, Ian Holm, Bridget Moynahan, and Donald Sutherland.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The poison arrows of satire that writer-director Andrew Niccol aims at international arms dealing and the great powers who let it happen for their own gain -- the U.S. dangles prominently on Niccol's hook -- are frustratingly scattershot.
Fresh: Even though Niccol sometimes puts unnecessary homilies in the mouths of his characters, he mostly pulls off the tricky feat of being direct and breezy at the same time. "Lord of War" skims along like a dance routine.
Fresh: A raffishly ironic and insinuating movie -- and probably the most sheerly enjoyable film of the year so far.
Fresh: Movies usually show bullets as if they're generic, anonymous masses of metal coming off a conveyor belt, while Lord of War wants us to see that each bullet is inscribed with somebody's name.
Marked by Extraordinary Powers of Intellect
This film has the power to allure you and captivate your attention,... almost demanding it. It certainly held me spellbound. The casting was great, however, being that Nicolas Cage was in this film I was hesitant, very hesitant, because in my mind I never thought he was much of an actor and, I have to admit the fact that his last name is Coppola (nephew of the legendary Francis Ford Coppola) always made me wonder if he really made it on his own merits. However, no more than 30 seconds into the film and all of that went right out the window. His performance in this film is to be applauded. He did a magnificent job in an outstanding film. This film should be nominated for film of the year!! I would recommend that all adults, no matter your typical taste in films, see this film. I believe it needs to be seen by most Americans, but definitely not children. I try to never use this phrase when reviewing a film or an album, but I make exceptions only on rare occassions. This is a must see film. It will touch your heart and soul. It digs deep, and it gets to you. One last note. In case anybody was wondering about the song 'Halelujah," it was done by Jeff Buckley and comes from his "Grace" CD. It's a remarkably beautiful piece of music. I highly recommend seeing this film. It's the best film I've seen all year.
What An Amazing Movie
I am glad Nicholas Cage found a good role because this movie is incredible. You see what happens to Africa and other third world countries and how there is no solution to the problem of guns. This movie has violence, but the violence helps tell the story of men like him giving the poorest people on the earth the means to continue killing each other. Everything about this movie is great. For something incredible check out the Lord of War soundtrack it is amazing and never gets old to listen to, you won't be disapointed.
A gem in my collection
I don't think the synopsis or trailer depict the movie accurately. It is darker toned but with some sad truths. Cage narrates his life from what seems he's not happy about. It's a lot like the movie Blow with Johnny Depp in terms of directing. The movie also has some great music in it. I believe it's worth watching at least once.
