Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Ryan Gosling is a tremendously talented actor, but he should really leave the storytelling to someone else. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Apr 13, 2015

Rotten: It's an oneiric hymn to destruction, an Armageddon anthem - a movie to see, if at all, under the influence. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, May 21, 2014

Rotten: Everything ... is painfully obvious or patently nonsensical. – Peter Keough, Boston Globe, May 14, 2015

Rotten: Indulgent and movie-like, Lost River is Gosling's weird, let's-do-this-thing folly. If it is a statement, it is one made by borrowing the vivid styles of the actual filmmakers he seems to admire ... – Brad Wheeler, Globe and Mail, Apr 24, 2015

I honestly think those stuck-up critics at Cannes are full of it! This film is amazing. I saw it with a group of friends at SXSW, and we all thought it was killer! Beautiful characters, great (and unique) cinematography, and stunning music make this a must-see.

Liked the film overall...

I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie so I went into it with an open mind. Overall I liked the movie and it kept my interest especially at the beginning. There were some parts that were a little strange, perhaps, but I've seen a lot worse in a lot of other movies that come out today. It's a sort of dark gritty film in some ways, a film noir? I liked the story overall however, it was original and I would watch it again. Overall I think Ryan Gosling did a great job for his first film. I think all the critics are a little too "critical" because it's a film coming from him. I think if you can get past any preconceived notions than you will enjoy the film. I recommend watching it overall. It's unique.

It’s great cinema. I hope you get it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film all the way through. At points it was difficult to watch but maintained great narrative. The story was linear but complex and the soundtrack was amazing. I highly recommend the watch.
