About the Movie
Romance fiction is the behemoth of the publishing industry; it outsells mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined. Yet no filmmaker has ever taken an honest look at the global community of romance writers and readers - until now. This funny and inspiring look into a billion-dollar industry turns up the trailblazers who have not only found fortunes and fulfillment in romance, but who are also at the front lines of the biggest power shift in publishing. Creating online empires and inventing new markets are authors like Beverly Jenkins, a pioneer of African American romance, Len Barot, a surgeon and lesbian romance legend who started her own publishing house, and the incomparable Nora Roberts. For three years, we follow the lives of five published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love. In the process, we discover a global storytelling sisterhood. Love Between the Covers, enters one of the few spaces where strong female characters are always center stage, where justice prevails in every book, and the broad spectrum of desires of women from all backgrounds are not feared, but explored unapologetically.
A Loving & Well-Crafted Homage to the Romance Genre
Fans of romance novels have known for years why the genre is so popular, and now with the release of this new documentary, the whole world will know. Filmed over three years the film spends time with every facet of the industry from writers to bloggers to fans. Hard hitting issues regarding pay and contracts are balanced with sentimental stories showing the camaraderie and support of the community to keep viewers intrigued as well as entertained.
Ms. Kahn showed the industry in a positive light overall, never mocking it, but acknowledging the naysayers. She touched on every sub-genre and showed the progression of love and romance throughout history. The stars of the romance community shared their knowledge along with mid-range and up and coming authors whose stories were empowering while admitting certain truths regarding making writing your career. To round out the players of this well-oiled machine Ms. Kahn spent time with bloggers, fans, and assistants too with their love of the genre very apparent and shown with respect. From start to finish this is a loving homage to an industry that is more powerful than the outside world thinks, a community where everyone is welcome and represented, and I recommend it to romance fans as well as those who love great storytelling!
