Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: When you consider all the ways that "Love & Mercy" could have gone terribly wrong, and how full of life it is in the end (and, yes, of love and mercy), I think the end product is almost miraculous. – Andrew O'Hehir,, Jun 9, 2015

Fresh: Unnerving as it is thrilling, as visually and aurally vivid as it is emotionally harrowing. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 5, 2015

Fresh: Rather like one of Wilson's records, it's a film of surprisingly effective layers, building towards a hugely satisfying crescendo. – James Mottram, South China Morning Post, Apr 6, 2016

Fresh: Like the sounds and voices that plagued Wilson, Love and Mercy is a musical biopic that gets in your head. – Nick Dent, Daily Telegraph (Australia), Dec 21, 2015

Could have been so much better

The acting was superb, especially Cusack and Banks. But the screenplay left a lot to be desired.

A Terrific and Disarming Biopic

What makes this biopic so effective is ultimately how low-key it is. The topics discussed are big scale, but more on an intimate level as they are more insular than most biopics would be. This is not about lavish concerts or showy scenes. This is a nuanced and poignant examination of a man’s destruction and eventual healing from the demons in his life. It helps that it has a razor sharp script, inspired directed, stellar production value considering its low budget and a trio of top notch performances from Elizabeth Banks, John Cusack and especially Paul Dano.

If you have been having an overload of summer blockbusters or have been feeling that 2015 has been an underwhelming movie year, check this out ASAP. It’ll leave you smiling at the end, on top of having an insatiable need to immediately listen to a Beach Boys album!

A melodic piece of history

The Beach Boys didn’t just spawn a genre of music. They didn’t just sing about cars, chicks and surfing. They also layed down some of the most amazing music I’ve ever heard. That’s mostly due to Brian Wilson. He is an amazing man and one of the most influential song writers alive. Enjoy the movie. It’s worth it.
