About the Movie

In 1958, in the state of Virginia, the idea of interracial marriage was not only considered to be immoral to many, it was also illegal. When Richard (Joel Edgerton, Black Mass) and Mildred (Ruth Negga, World War Z) fall in love, they are aware of the eyes staring at them and the words said behind their backs. It is when they get married, however, that words and looks become actions, and the two are arrested. The couple decide to take their case all of the way to the Supreme Court in order to fight for their love in this passionate and gripping drama that critics are calling "a masterpiece." – Jason Gorber,

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: What is radical about Nichols's film is the extent to which he focuses not on the legal fight and ensuing national attention but on the Lovings themselves. – Tom Shone, Newsweek, Feb 3, 2017

Fresh: Effectively acted and occasionally moving, the film both benefits from and is undermined by writer/director Jeff Nichols' no-frills approach to the circumstances leading up to the court case. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Nov 12, 2016

Fresh: A resplendent and remarkably subtle, yet deeply affecting, drama about the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision that invalidated state laws prohibiting interracial marriage. – Tirdad Derakhshani, Philadelphia Inquirer, Nov 15, 2016

Fresh: Nichols is one of today's finest rural storytellers, and he never wavers in his approach, going small where others would go grandiose. "Loving" is an exercise in restraint befitting the quiet couple at its center. – Adam Graham, Detroit News, Nov 18, 2016
