Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The screenplay, by Eric Darnell and Noah Baumbach, churns out the snappy witticisms with admirable creative gusto, but it whizzes along at such a frenetic pace that you'll probably miss half of them. – Amy Biancolli, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 8, 2012

Fresh: From time to time the improbable occurs: A sequel outdoes its original. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 8, 2012

Fresh: Here is a family movie from which absolutely nothing is expected, and yet it's one of the week's best releases: a muscular, potent and very funny film. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Oct 18, 2012

Fresh: You don't have to be a child of four to enjoy this series, but it helps. – Nigel Andrews, Financial Times, Oct 18, 2012

The "Madagascar" saga is one of those rare franchises that seems to get surprisingly better with each movie. The stories have become much more fun and engaging, the characters' wild personalities have greatly broadened, and the animation has continually improved in quality. "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" not only succeeds its two predecessors in almost every way, but it successfully caters to both kids and their parents with its rapid pacing and skillful blend of action and comedy. In short, it's a blast!

The second sequel follows Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Gloria the Hippo, and Melman the Giraffe as they continue their whirlwind journey to get back home to their beloved Big Apple, and of course, King Julien, Maurice, Mort, and the Penguins are all along for the adventure. Their trek takes them through Europe, where they find the perfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent - Madagascar style.

From the very beginning to the exciting finale, there's never a single dull moment in this film. When the animals aren't escaping from the clutches of the villainous Captain Chantal DuBois (brilliantly voiced by Frances McDormand), they're either making silly wisecracks or performing some pretty cool acrobatic maneuvers in a series of random montages. The movie also introduces us to three new characters (Vitaly the Tiger, Gia the Jaguar, and Stefano the Sea Lion) who not only deliver some well-needed depth to the story, but stand out as arguably the most endearing and genuinely likable protagonists in the entire cast. And might I just add that Marty's "Circus Afro" song is the most insanely catchy tune I've probably ever heard.

Sure, the plot may not make a lot of sense and there are a few predictable moments at times, but "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" is still an incredibly fun, dazzlingly colorful film for the whole family to enjoy. Kids will love the frenetic pacing and delightful animation, while parents will be entertained by the movie's exciting story and cleverly disguised use of adult humor. I had a great time with this flick, and it really surprised me with everything it had to offer. So if you're looking for a wildly good time, "Madagascar 3" is an excellent choice. At the very least, it's worth a rent.

Best of the Three

I saw this in 3D with my friends and we all agreed that this was the best movie in the series. I believe that this will be the final Madagascar movie (because of the decisions the characters make in the end). If you liked the other 2, then yuo definitly should see this one.

Better than the rest

This movie is easily the best in the franchise. Period.
