Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A gut-punching, heartbreaking movie, with Affleck's Lee in the epicentre ... a perfect role for the under-appreciated actor.
Fresh: There are no contrivances, no manipulations, no false notes. Lonergan's film rings true as the complex relationships and multi-layered intricacies of grief find a compass that points to calmer waters. Prepare to be moved. This is one of the year's best.
Fresh: Adopting a jigsaw-like structure, as past memories impinge on the present, Lonergan layers his characters with an enviable emotional complexity.
Fresh: This is an exquisitely well-told tale about the way we deal with trauma and loss.
Dark. Dramatic. Depressing.
2017 Oscar Nominated is a crying shame.
Michelle Williams is in the cast so I knew movie was going to be depressing. But wow-this movie is a bitter cup of tea that has steeped too long and grown cold. And Williams is nominated for Best Supporting Actress! OY ! She gives us 10 minutes of her whiny, crying, depression...which is all she ever does...and that gets her a nom. Sigh. There were far too many other contenders....
Critics rave over Afflecks performance of a man processing grief. While his performance is convincing, movie took forever and a day to reveal why. So when the big reveal arrives, I was exhausted. And you know what? Affleck looks exhausted throughout the entire movie. Just let the guy act, already.
This movie could have been filmed in any city and called anything. However, in order to tie in the pompous title, the director had to drag us past every scenic point in the city of Manchester, thus prolonging the reveal even more. Yawn.
The critics gave this movie such high praises, which makes me think the Manchester Commerce is paying them off.
While this movie is not my cup of tea, I am taking it a step further against the Oscars by saying I do not recommend this movie.
If you want to watch something to make yourself depressed then this is your movie. Basically a movie about how a bunch of horrible stuff happens to one person and absolutely nothing is resolved by the time the credits roll. The flashback editing is absolutely jarring and terrible as well.
Loved Margaret and You Can Count On Me
This one is so self-serious, I got fatigued. You could tell it was written for Matt Damon. The gay men at the bar are staring at him. The single mom is crushing on him. Very male adolescent fantasy in terms of the brooding antihero that some people are still attracted to even though he's bad news. He has a hair trigger temper and gets in bar fights... and you know how it goes. He's Wolverine.
