About the Movie
In this action comedy inspired by true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime. Along with a group of half-brained criminals led by Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) and an absurdly faulted heist plan, David manages the impossible and makes off with $17 million in cash…only problem is he foolishly hands the money over to this wild group of double crossers and has been set up to take the fall. With the bandits blowing the millions on lavish and ridiculous luxuries, they leave behind a glaring trail of evidence. Now on the lam and in over his head, David must dodge the authorities, evade a hilarious hit man, Mike McKinney (Jason Sudeikis), and try to turn the tables on the ones he trusted most.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The movie has been on ice awaiting release for over a year, owing to the bankruptcy of its studio. But some of the jokes were moldy long before that happened. Masterminds owes us our two hours back.
Rotten: The subtext is all about class dispossession, but a movie in which a character is stupid enough to propose a big-time bank robbery so that his gang can make it into the news ("the big show") is pushing it.
Rotten: Masterminds finds plenty of targets for its satirical jabs and lets them all off the hook.
Rotten: The matter-of-fact oddball air of television sketch comedy predominates, which makes for a wacky movie but another perfect turn, as David's fiancee Jandice, from Kate McKinnon
Ok I must have seen a different movie from everyone else because this thing was HILARIOUS. 4.5 stars easily... seriously! I'll just say: if you like the people in this movie, or the director, or the premise, but maybe the reviews or the trailer are making you think twice, SEE IT and make up your own mind! The trailer really doesn't convey what is good about this movie. Maybe just go see it when you really feel like you need to laugh. It starts off strong and gets you started laughing, and before you know it the movie is over and you laughed through the entire thing. That's the only thing I can think of... maybe some of those critics just weren't in the right mood. If you were a part of making this movie and you're reading this: THANK YOU for making this. Please continue to make unique, special movies like this. Everyone did a phenomenal job here. So glad I decided to see this.
Based on a true story...
now add Owen Wilson & Zack Crapilopolous and you got a movie that is more goofy than true. An SNL reunion fest kept it goofy and made for some good laughs. I like that movie "edumacated" me about the "true" parts of this movie.
Kate McKinnon is a genius.
