Fresh: Maud's life was constricted, but her gaze was expansive. And so is her movie. – Bob Mondello, NPR, Aug 17, 2017

The sincerity of the characters humbles me every time I watch it. Well done.

Inspiring story that is refreshing and beautiful. Enjoyed everything about it!

Touching story

Maud Lewis - afflicted with rheumatic arthritis, is a tiny frail woman, cared for by her parents but left to a mean-spirited aunt and cold-hearted brother on their death. Rather than shrivel under them, she strikes out on her own, getting a job as cleaner/cook for a hard fishmonger. They end up married in the one-room shack out on a county road that Maud turns into a work of art with her brilliantly colored primitive (think Grandma Moses) paintings. Discovered by summer people, Maud's fame as a painter grows, and yet she shyly and happily keeps selling her work from her shack, enjoying the simple act of creating her art. Her tough husband and she are together for over 30 years, tied by bonds of love that neither can easily express. The two leads are fantastic - no scene-chewing, just true emotions come through in characters that can't articulate or even easily show their feelings. Inspiring, touching. They didn't have much but they weren't poor in spirit.
