About the Movie

Freshly hatched bee Maya is a little whirlwind and simply won't follow the rules of the hive. One of these rules, of course, is not to trust other bugs, especially the hornets that live beyond the meadow. But sweet Maya can't help but make friends with all kinds of other bugs, including a violin-playing grasshopper, a dung beetle and even a young hornet named Sting. When the Royal Jelly is stolen, the hornets are the prime suspects and Maya is thought to be their accomplice. Now, it's up to Maya and all of her new friends to prove her innocence and find the missing Royal Jelly! "In the same vein as FINDING NEMO and ANTZ...this is a story about adventure, self-discovery, tolerance and friendship." (WeekendNotes.com)

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The film's messages about friendship, acceptance and being yourself are clear enough for the young, and grown-ups can read the story as a warning about conformity and about going to war on false pretenses. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Apr 30, 2015

Rotten: This sweet, play-it-safe adaptation of TV's honeybee heroine is as innocuous and uninspired as preschool animation gets. – Peter Debruge, Variety, May 1, 2015

Rotten: "Maya the Bee" embodies the kind of self-consciously uplifting treacle some adults insist kids want. They package "Maya" like honey, but it tastes like medicine. – Charles Solomon, Los Angeles Times, Apr 30, 2015

Fresh: I really loved it. I loved Maya. – Margaret Pomeranz, At the Movies (Australia), Apr 27, 2015

Customer Reviews

It’s a nice little movie for nice little kids.

I think Americans have gotten used to fast-paced and loud animated movies that try to wink slyly at adults while entertaining the kids. Not necessarily a bad thing. This movie, though, is not at all of that ilk. It is an earnest and innocuous movie that aims its sensibility squarely at children under age 7, and if you’re looking for jokes that integrate adult cultural references — fuhgeddabouttit. My 6-year-old loved it. That’s good enough for me. And in some ways I found it a welcome respite after the amphetamine-style entertainment of the Lego Movie and other Hollywood fare. (“Maya the Bee” is originally from Germany.)
