Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [Honre'] does succeed, though, in conveying the joy of storytelling, which has made Ovid's work endure; the engagingly knotty structure is full of playful digressions and tales within tales. – Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader, Apr 20, 2017

Rotten: In Metamorphoses, writer-director Christophe Honore tries to domesticate, if not neuter, the strangeness of Ovid's classic tales. – Diego Semerene, Slant Magazine, Mar 23, 2017

Fresh: Honore's film aspires to be inclusive, even encyclopedic-through myth, to speak about the whole of the human condition today as Ovid spoke about it in his time. – Jonathan Romney, Film Comment Magazine, Mar 6, 2015

Such a Captivating, Smart Film

The visuals are stunning - what more can you say? I found it hard to look away and wanted Europa's journey to continue. It's hard to believe that this is the first film for most of the actors; everyone is superb. Even if you've never read Ovid, you can easily watch this movie. Highly recommend!

I LOVE this movie. Every frame is beautiful and the film is very compelling, particularly how it portrays sex and sexuality so frankly. I'd read the stories in my high school Latin class and the adaptation here made me wish I had paid more attention! I'd highly recommend this to any avid foreign film watcher.
