About the Movie

Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson ("Gangs of New York," "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace") and Oscar-winner Julia Roberts ("Ocean's Eleven," "Erin Brockovich") star in the controversial true story of Michael Collins, the Irish revolutionary leader whose bravery and unswerving dedication to the Irish people changed history as he fought to free Ireland from British rule in the early 1900s. Collins' efforts to create a free and peaceful country resulted in the triumph of a free Irish Republic, and the terror in Northern Ireland that continues today. Co-starring Aidan Quinn ("Stolen Summer," "Practical Magic"), Emmy-winner Alan Rickman (the "Harry Potter" series, "Galaxy Quest"), Brendan Gleeson ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Cold Mountain") and Oscar-nominee Stephen Rea ("V for Vendetta," "The Reaping").

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Played with great magnetism and triumphant bluster by Liam Neeson, the film's Michael Collins easily lives up to his nickname. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Mar 28, 2010

Rotten: There are pain and honor in [Neeson's] performance, and they constantly rise up to redeem a film that is less probing, less thoughtful than its director's claims and aspirations for it. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Intelligent, enormously accomplished and seriously problematic, Neil Jordan's ambitious account of the activities of arguably the central figure in Ireland's painful, bloody fight for independence from the British Empire has a great deal to offer... – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Jordan always had 6-foot-4 Liam Neeson in mind to play the man they called "the Big Fellow," and it's more than size that makes Neeson fit the part of a leader known for his "cloudburst temperament." – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Mar 28, 2010

No Man Can Do Enough For Ireland

The title I chose for my review, taken from the Irish play "Juno and the Paycock," could easily have been the tagline for this film. I am not Irish myself, but the historical background of "Michael Collins" is fascinating and more than a little disturbing. Regardless of how accurate the movie is, it holds the viewer's interest from the opening scene depicting the Easter Uprising of 1916 to the final scenes of...well, I'm not going to spoil it for you! The R rating should be taken seriously. There is plenty of profanity in the movie, including numerous uses of the f-word. It is also quite violent. That being said, those who are comfortable with films such as Braveheart (this is sort of the Irish version of Braveheart set in the 20th century) and have an interest in history or Irish culture in particular should find more than enough to win them over. Liam Neeson is as gripping as ever in his performance. Long live Ireland!
