About the Movie

Hailed by Michael Moore as "one of the best documentaries about a band that I've ever seen" and by Pitchfork as "the funniest, most meta music movie since SPINAL TAP," MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS is a truly hilarious and touching film about two brothers, Matt and Tom Berninger. Matt, the lead singer of the critically acclaimed rock band The National, finally finds himself flush with success. His younger brother Tom is a loveable slacker - a filmmaker and metal-head still living with his parents in Cincinnati. On the eve of The National's biggest tour to date, Matt invites Tom to work for the band as a roadie, unaware of Tom's plan to film the entire adventure. What starts as a rock documentary quickly becomes a crowd-pleasing journey about family, ambition, and the creative process.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The finest rock doc since Anvil: The Story of Anvil. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Apr 4, 2014

Fresh: For all their obvious differences, the bond between affable Tom and laser-intense Matt reveals itself in ways both subtle and profound. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Apr 3, 2014

Fresh: Alternately hilarious, cringe-inducing, inspiring, depressing, stupid and profoundly intelligent. – Chris Talbott, Associated Press, Apr 3, 2014

New access to a band I love plus the insight of a relationship between two brothers with distinctly different paths to success, or lack thereof. If you like The National you will love this. If you've never heard of The National you should start here and work you way backwards. Way to go Tommy!

A film about a relationship, more than a band.

Huge fan of the band, more so after seeing this film. Really a film about the relationship between the two bothers, more than about the band itself. If you like the band, you will love this movie.

Amazing film.

It’s difficult to explain exactly why I needed this film right now in my life, but it was fantastic.

Thanks Tom, and good job.
