Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: After Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy, the director Harmony Korine evinces a kind of integrity -- he tries never to entertain, and lo, he succeeds. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Korine's most lavishly produced pic to date begins as a sweet-tempered tale of social misfits-turned-celebrity impersonators, but falls short of its ambition to say something meaningful about the obsessive nature of celebrity culture. – Scott Foundas, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: [Harmony] Korine hasn't released a feature film in nine years, and his new Mister Lonely is richer and sweeter than anything he's ever made. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Korine falls so thoroughly in love with many of his images, including his opening shot, that he stretches them out in hypnotic slow motion. – Tasha Robinson, Chicago Tribune, Oct 18, 2008

Great Movie I Love It

The Movie Was Funny And Romantic But What I Don't Get Is Why Did They Use Micheal Jackson? And Marilyn Monroe If The Woman Is Dead! But I Still Love The Movie

better than I expected

Strange, but (mostly) in a good way. I've read reviews in which people say, sure, it's original, but it's also pointless, but I don't think that's true. Some things about this film could have been done better (more character development would have been nice, and a few sequences, like some that involved nuns jumping out of planes, struck me as out of place and unnecessary), but it did have it's share of touching, heartbreaking, funny, and thought-provoking scenes. Plus, you get to see all sorts of funny interactions, like Michael Jackson playing ping-pong with Charlie Chaplin, and the Pope sleeping with the Queen of Britain. Anyway, if you like really offbeat types of movies, you might want to give this one a chance.

Okay.....but Harmony disappointed me with this one.

I'm a huge Harmony Korine fan. He is very creative, and I love every one of his movies before Mister Lonely. Gummo being my all time favorite movie. (I have yet to see Trash Humpers) I am just very disappointed with this film. It wasn't edgy enough to be a Korine film. What happened to the Gummo days? Should I no longer expect movies like that anymore? Don't get me wrong, the movie was all right, had a very 'indie' feel to it. I was just expecting more from Harmony Korine. Hopefully hist upcoming films are better. It's worth a watch though.
