Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: On the plus side, the Mojave desert looks mighty handsome, and I really liked the twangy guitar. – Ella Taylor, NPR, Jan 21, 2016

Rotten: In his second directorial effort, "Mojave," Monahan has no ... map to follow, and he wanders in a land of sophomoric pretentiousness and banal profundities. – Peter Keough, Boston Globe, Jan 28, 2016

Rotten: Like the high desert that provides its main setting, William Monahan's "Mojave" is dry, often windy and full of hot air. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Jan 21, 2016

Rotten: It would better to call it Two Actors in Search of a Story. – Tirdad Derakhshani, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jan 22, 2016

Total waste of time, bad acting "brother" feels like a lifetime channel TV movie

Sometimes bad is good.

You can enjoy a bad movie with good actors as much as a good movie with average actors. I got a kick out of this odd little non-story that doesn't make much sense. Since I'll watch Oscar Issac is just about anything, this was worth it just for his sociopath. But the real surprise was Garrett Hedlund. Plus anytime Mark Wahlberg wants to make fun on Hollywood, I'm game.

Occasionally I see a film where I totally disagree with the critics, this is one of them. I can't explain why but this movie enchants me. I love the two lead actors and the narrative is a cool mixture of reality and storybook. The dialogue is the meat of the film I would say with lots of interesting Shakespeare thrown in, turning the whole tale into a play of sorts.
