About the Movie
Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ewan McGregor lead an all-star cast in this criminally funny comedy. After a priceless painting is stolen, shady art dealer Charlie Mortdecai (Depp) is recruited by an old rival (McGregor) to get it back. Mortdecai questions his rival's intentions, but takes the job for the money and to keep his high-maintenance wife (Paltrow) happy. With the help of his manservant, Mortdecai must face terrorists, angry Russians, and more in a hilarious globe-trotting chase.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Mr. Depp's wizardly expertise at disappearing into a character is intact. But what if that character isn't funny and hasn't an ounce of charm?
Rotten: Go if you're a raging Anglophile with an afternoon to burn or you just love Depp, even at his hammiest. Otherwise, don't point this thing at you.
Rotten: A whirlwind of horrible British accents, too much gagging and not enough good gags, and weak dialogue that, while not exactly terrible, is terribly boring.
Rotten: Depp's strenuously unfunny performance turns a frivolous caper comedy into a grim death march to the closing credits.
Johnny is AMAZING he can do no wrong, he is so Multi Talented and I absoulutely love his films.
I'm glad I didn't read the critics' reviews beforehand...
I actually really enjoyed this movie, and my friend and I both laughed hard enough to cry. Most of the audience in the same showing was also laughing quite a lot. This movie is pretty ridiculous, but it didn't really take itself seriously, which to me made it even more entertaining. I didn't think it was a waste at all, though I also went into this movie without any kind of pre-set expectations. I'm kind of surprised it's getting such harsh criticism, but to each their own, I suppose?
Depp's portrayal of Mortdecai is excellent. The character is very bold in his quirkiness and Depp added a lot of charm with his clever use of subtle comedic gestures.
The other acting is adequately complimentary. The overall storyline is well-crafted. Some scenes are a bit dry, but nevertheless enjoyable experiences with the various characters.
With a talented lead, a humorous plot and a lovable central character, this reviewer is truly puzzled by Mortdecai's present lack of success.
