Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: This mirthless Eddie Murphy vehicle from the director of 'Driving Miss Daisy' is rife with hoary 'magical negro' stereotypes.
Rotten: Somehow Murphy manages to lift his dignified, all-knowing servant character off the page, giving a meticulously composed performance in a vehicle that can't help but feel superficially repackaged.
Rotten: It's repugnant for its dehumanizing view (however unintentionally so) of a black man, and repugnant for its emptying-out of one of the great black performers of the time into a sanitized symbol of acceptable blackness.
Rotten: Murphy's low-key but affecting performance is filled with loaded and loving glances. And the restraint becomes the 55-year-old star. If only the film were better.
Critics are wrong and stereotype everything. This is a simple story of a cook who touched the lives of three generations for the better. There was no magical anything or repackaging. Eddie Murphy performed magically as a human being who simply does a very good deed. 👌 perfect performance. Critics should just look at the simple human triumph and tragedy in the movie and not use a political back drop for anything?
Forget The Critics - Great Movie!!!
I saw this at the theater and thoroughly enjoyed it. Watch it...you will not be disappointed. I am buying the movie even though I already saw it cause i loved it!
Changes and political influences
This feels like a good movie brought on a different plane, BUT the "professional" critics have seem to deem it necessary to bring a liberal, progressive "toady" slant to thier reviews. deplorable
