Fresh: The film's plots are soft and flimsy, and they don't mesh as gracefully as they might, but they do serve as an adequate trellis for Mr. McKellen's performance, which is gratifyingly but unsurprisingly wonderful.
Fresh: The mystery subplot lacks the ingenuity of the greatest Holmes stories, but McKellen excels, switching effortlessly between the reclusive beekeeper with a faltering memory and the elegant younger detective at the height of his powers.
Fresh: Even those who've read the book can be startled by what happens in Mr. Holmes, while they're being moved by McKellen in a role he's come to late, but with his customary elegance.
Fresh: McKellen is masterful, in a multilayered tale that navigates the no man's land between memory and fiction.
This movie is so good. Its complex themes add greatly to the collection of Sherlock Holmes adaptations. A fascinating watch.
Can’t wait to see this
I grew up reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, watching Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and smoking a Pipe… (Between reading “The Lord of the Rings” and the Holmes Canon, I didn’t have a chance against the evil weed)… and am thrilled to see more and more genres taking up the story. Some of my very favorite “takes” on the elderly, retired Holmes is Michael Chabon’s “The Final Solution”… Neil Gaiman’ “A Study in Emerald”, and Laurie King’s “Beekeeper’s Apprentice” series… So much love for the great Detective!!!!! Looking forward to seeing this movie!!!!!
Better than I expected
Fantastic handling of Sir Arthurs brilliant work. Thank you for the great addition to my film collection.
