Julie (Joey Heatherton) is a spoiled young heiress on the California coast, so weary of her wealth she wrecks cars for fun and so bored of her fianceée's "fumbling in the dark" that she longs for freedom. Liberation comes in the form of Ben (Troy Donhaue), a sandy-haired stranger who swears that he and Julie were lovers in a former life - their own ancestors, in fact. Surprisingly, Julie's aunt (Jeanette Nolan) confirms every one of Ben's eerie recollections. Although a caretaker turns up murdered and suspicion turns to Ben, there's romance in the salty air. But as the couple elopes off to sea, a storm breaks out. Atmospherically directed by veteran character actor and thriller specialist William Conrad (Two on a Guillotine), this chilling Gothic mystery is sure to heat up your plasma.
Worth viewing for all the wrong reasons.
This silly potboiler starts out promisingly enough to get you hooked, but sadly veers off track toward the end. However, the plot is not the reason to watch this film. It’s the 1965 trappings - the cars, the clothes, the sharp-focus black & white photography - that keep you glued to this picture. What fun to wallow in this inadvertent but precise time capsule! Viewers with a camp sensibility will have a field day with Jeanette Nolan’s hairdos alone. Joey Heatherton sports a few odd coifs herself. Joey was a fine 60’s-style sex kitten and her look is quintessential. Troy Donahue’s acting proves why his career didn’t last very long. Nice scenery along California’s 17-mile Drive. Watch this film as a guilty pleasure.
