About the Movie
An 8-year-old black child named Victoria is taken in for a night by the white wealthy family of one of her schoolmates. The experience haunts her for years – as an adult living in Paris, she dreams of attaining such privilege. But Victoria unexpectedly reconnects with the family’s youngest son, and the romantic encounter reshapes her life yet again. Adapted from one of Nobel laureate Doris Lessing’s short stories, Civeyrac crafts an intimate look at the politics of race and class identity.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: As drifting and dreamy as its searching heroine, "My Friend Victoria" takes a graceful but unsatisfying stroll through the life and longings of a young black woman in contemporary Paris.
Fresh: My Friend Victoria has a specific vibrancy as delicate and understated as Lessing's social critique.
Rotten: The film disappoints in its refusal to allow for deeper articulations of racism beyond, well, visible and verbal displays of racism.
Fresh: My Friend Victoria offers a ruefully witty auto-critique of the limitations of bourgeois French cinema, which either cannot see other races or absorbs them till they disappear
